McMaster University offers a three year undergraduate medical Program that culminates in the conferring of an M.D. degree. The Program is different from those at other medical schools in that students are largely responsible for their own learning, and their progress is frequently evaluated by peers, tutors and other faculty members.

InMcMaster University Continuing Medical Education sponsored a pilot project on practice-based small group learning for family and general practitioners in the Hamilton area.

This led to the establishment in of the PBSG Learning Program (PBSG). The School of Medicine, established in and renamed the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine inoffers major programs in undergraduate, postgraduate and graduate medical education.

The department's unique philosophies in teaching and education are world-renowned, and its ability to collaborate with one another in an inter-disciplinary manner has allowed us to develop a unique research capacity.

PBL gets thrown around a lot as a buzzword but it entails learning by using a problem as context to identify gaps in knowledge, areas of interest, and sources of information to supplement learning. This is often done using patient-based cases, both self-directed and small group learning, as well as facilitation by faculty members.

The Undergraduate Medical Program for the MD degree was initiated ingraduating its first students in May At present, students are admitted to the program each year. The three-year program in Medicine uses a problem-based approach to learning that should apply throughout the physician's career.
