McMaster University offers a three year undergraduate medical Program that culminates in the conferring of an M.D. degree. The Program is different from those at other medical schools in that students are largely responsible for their own learning, and their progress is frequently evaluated by peers, tutors and other faculty members.
InMcMaster University Continuing Medical Education sponsored a pilot project on practice-based small group learning for family and general practitioners in the Hamilton area.
This led to the establishment in of the PBSG Learning Program (PBSG). The School of Medicine, established in and renamed the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine inoffers major programs in undergraduate, postgraduate and graduate medical education.
The Undergraduate Medical Program for the MD degree was initiated. The faculty function as learning resources or guides. Learning by a process of inquiry is stressed. The central focus of the pre-clerkship program is the tutorial.
The class is divided into small groups of approximately students, each with a tutor. The Program enables students to build upon previous education and experience, using available learning resources and opportunities. The competencies achieved by graduates will qualify them to proceed to further postgraduate training.
